The August Lock motor struggles to actuate the deadbolt. Error messages appear in the August app indicating motor overload or obstruction. The lock may intermittently fail to lock or unlock. Audible grinding or straining noises are present during operation. LED indicator displays a red flashing pattern during attempted operation.
The August Lock uses a DC motor and gearbox to extend/retract the deadbolt. Mechanical binding increases the motor's load. Overtightening the mounting screws deforms the lock housing and internal mechanisms, increasing friction. Incorrect alignment affects motor power draw. The control circuit monitors motor current and throws an error if it exceeds a threshold. RF communication is typically Bluetooth LE, but is not the root cause.
Before re-tightening any screws, manually push the August Lock housing flush against the door surface. This can help alleviate stress on the internal motor mechanism and prevent binding. A small shim behind the August Lock can sometimes improve alignment. If you are using a Bell Giga Hub, ensure the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channel is set to 1, 6, or 11 to minimize interference with Bluetooth LE.
