The Schlage lock relies on secure code transmission via RF (2.4GHz Wi-Fi or Zigbee) to the internal microcontroller. Low battery voltage impacts the RF transceiver's transmit power, leading to failed code validation. The keypad matrix relies on specific voltage thresholds for each key press; cold temperatures can alter resistance values. The programming code validation sequence also requires a successful handshake with the Schlage cloud servers (if cloud-connected).
For Schlage Connect locks, a "three-tap reset sequence" (press the Schlage button three times in quick succession) can sometimes clear a hung state and allow code entry after a programming error.
